Hotels of Pyongyang

In 2019 I was fortunate enough to travel to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) to document the 11 tourist hotels in it’s capital city Pyongyang. The images are published in a 200 page book called “Hotels of Pyongyang” published by Headtilt Press and authored by James Scullin. The book can be purchased at www.hotelsofpyongyang.com

“While the state looms large in DPRK life, each hotel operates with a degree of autonomy, retaining its own unique style and feel. For a country that tends to be rather homogenised, each hotel has its own features, colour schemes and interior styles. Furniture, upholsteries, table cloths and light fittings differ from hotel to hotel and leave their own semblance that the aesthetic choices in design and style are made by individuals rather than state decree.”
James Scullin
